The city of St. Augustine was founded in the 16th century and served as the capital of Spanish Florida for nearly 200 years.  St. Augustine and Florida became part of the United States in 1821 and the area of St. Augustine, especially Fort Marion, played and important role in both the Second Seminole War and the American Civil War. In the 1880's St. Augustine, due to the work and influence of Henry Flagler, became a winter resort for the wealthy northern elite. Flagler constructed the famous Ponce de Leon Hotel in St. Augustine as a luxury resort in 1888, which today is the home of St. Augustine's Flagler College.
